Name: Crystal Yi

Hometown: Woodridge, IL

Favorite Artist: Tori Kelly

Describe yourself in three words.

-Ugh I would say I’m pretty awkward, adventurous, and a fatass. Wait am I allowed to say that? hahah I’m a shopaholic.

Growing up who was your role model that inspired you?

-My role model growing up was Alicia Keys. She was beautiful, independent, and an awesome singer. And she still is!

When did you first start singing?

-My parents would always force me to sing at church as a little kid. And after hearing a bunch of artists like Alicia Keys, Beyonce, and Christina Aguilara, I would just try to copy their voices, which is how I ended up with the voice I have now. I’m not saying I have their voices haha but trying to copy them has given me this weird voice. But I think I started taking singing seriously my senior year of high school.

What does singing do for you?

-Singing, for me, is now an outlet for stress and all these things that have been built up for a while. It also allows me to connect and just chill with people who share the same interest.

What do you want to achieve through singing?

-Hm…I want to be able to link up with other artists who can help me develop skills as an artist and make awesome covers. Hopefully one day I’ll even be able to make songs of my own. One dream that I have as a singer is to meet John Legend. Or do backup vocals for Common. Because lord knows, they are both fine men.

You’ve been in the city for awhile now, what is your favorite place to eat in Chicago?

-My favorite place……..either Al’s Beef, or De Pasada haha. They’re both so yummy!

Besides just restaurants, where is your favorite place in the city?

-Theres this spot by the Shedd Aquarium I love going to at night because the city lights light up the sky and after Navy Pier and drops off into black. It’s beautiful.

Where would you love to travel to one day?

-Australia without a doubt. I feel like it’s equivalent to California; beautiful people, beautiful scenery, and just pure beauty everywhere.

Besides singing, what other things are you passionate about?

-I love pottery, it’s actually my main media of art and it used to be my main source of stress relief but unfortunately, I haven’t been able to make ceramics because there isn’t an open studio available.

Are you a student? What are you studying?

-I was a psychology major, but now I’m a studio arts major. In grad school, I’ll be an anaplastologist. I’ll be making prosthetics so if your ear gets chopped off somehow, I GOTCHUU.

If you had the opportunity to change one thing in this world in a positive way, what would you do?

-Free healthcare hands-down. We would be saving so many lives and so much money that could be used to help various problems. Money helps and hurts this country, if there was one less thing to worry about (healthcare) it would help out people so much. At least I think so.

Is there an inspirational or motivational quote that you live by each day to help you stay motivated? If so what would that quote be and why?

-“If it’s not okay, it’s not the end. It’s just a simple reminder that even though you feel like you’ve hit rock bottom, it’s not then end of the world and you just gotta pick yourself back up and move forward.”

What is your purpose in life? haha

-My purpose is to eat popeyes for the rest of my life and be happy.
